Best Magnetic Knife Holders for 2025

Updated May 19, 2025 by Joseph Stein

Looking for a convenient way to store and display your kitchen knives? Do you have a small kitchen with limited countertop space? Magnetic knife holders can be a great option. In this post, we review some of the best magnetic knife bars and blocks that are currently trending online.

What is a Magnetic Knife Holder?

A magnetic knife holder is typically a metal or wood strip, containing strong magnets, that you mount on a wall to hold knives and other metal kitchen tools. Instead of storing knives in a block or drawer, you just “stick” them to the magnetic strip and they stay securely in place.

In addition to mountable strips, magnetic blocks are popular as well and can be stored on a countertop.

Magnetic knife holders are not just useful in the kitchen. They are incredibly handy in basements, garages, sheds, craft rooms, etc. – anywhere you need to store light tools such as keys, screwdrivers, shears, scissors, etc. Magnetic strips make a great storage option for storing craft supplies as well.

Here at KnivesAdvisor, we like magnetic knife holders for a variety of reasons. They…

  • Keep knives organized and easy to reach.
  • Save counter space compared to a bulky knife block.
  • Can be more hygienic, since it’s easier to clean than the slots of a knife block.
  • Show off your knives, if you’re into kitchen aesthetics.

Styles of Magnetic Knife Holders

Magnetic knife holders range quite a bit in style. Some are made in stainless-steel, while others have a wooden finish to match a more rustic or cozy kitchen vibe. Some come in mountable strips, while other come in blocks for storing on your countertop.

Based on our research, there are three primary styles:

  • Stainless steel: stainless steel provides a modern, clean look. This could be a nice option if you intend to match other stainless appliances.
  • Wood-covered: This style looks like a solid piece of walnut, oak, or bamboo but hides the magnets inside. It exudes a warmer, cozier vibe.
  • Hidden: These are typically mounted behind a backsplash or under a cabinet, so it looks like the knives are just floating.

Where to Mount Magnetic Knife Holders

Magnetic knife holders are typically mounted above the countertop, just above where you do most of your food prep. That’s the most efficient location. Depending on your kitchen layout, however, your mounting options may be limited. Be sure to measure before you buy.

Here are some of the most popular mounting areas:

  • Above the countertop: Classic spot — right above where you do your chopping.
  • Inside a cabinet door: If you want a “clean” look and don’t want knives visible.
  • On a kitchen island: If you have a prep area, you can mount it along the side of an island.
  • Near the stove: Handy if you use your knives for quick-cutting while cooking.
  • On a backsplash: A pretty magnetic strip can actually look like part of the kitchen decor.
  • Vertical mounting: Some mount it vertically instead of horizontally if wall space is tight.

What to Look for in a Magnetic Knife Holder

Not all magnetic knife holders are created equal. Here’s a breakdown of what to look for when considering buying one.

Magnet Strength

It’s important to have strong magnets, strong enough to hold heavy chef’s knives without them sliding or falling. Weak magnets can be both frustrating and dangerous.

Material

For metal knife holders, look for stainless steel for durability and longevity. For wood knife holders, ensure the wood is solid and of good quality (acacia, walnut, bamboo, maple). Cheaper wooden versions that use a veneer can peel over time, crack when mounting, or even splinter.

Size

Measure your space first. Knife holders typically come in standard lengths of 10″, 12”, 16”, 18″ and in some cases up to 24″. Make sure the strip is long enough to accommodate your knife collection, but not awkwardly huge for your wall. Magnetic knife blocks are typically around 12″ wide x 10″ high but can vary.

Mounting System

Ensure that the knife holder comes with adequate wall-mounting screws. Depending on you wall surface, you may need to anchor drywall screws before mounting. Adhesive strips can work if you intent to hold lighter knives (ie, paring knives) and other small items; however, they may not hold well over time.

Safety for Knife Edges

Some strips are just metal and can scratch knife blades over time. Wood-faced or padded designs are gentler on expensive knives.

Style / Aesthetics

Match it to your kitchen vibe — modern, rustic, farmhouse, minimalist, whatever you’ve got going on.

Bonus Features

Some magnetic knife holders have built-in hooks for scissors, peelers, etc. These can get complicated, so we suggest keeping it simple.

Final Words

In this post, we reviewed a range of highly rated magnetic knife holders — ranging from magnetic strips to magnetic blocks. This curated list represents some of the best magnetic knife holders available online today.

In short, magnetic knife strips can be a convenient and cost-effective way to store and display your kitchen knives. They work great for smaller kitchens with limited countertop space, and fit nicely in kitchens with a cottage style or farmhouse vibe.
